There is luxury in a Range Rover that cannot be had in a Jeep Grand Cherokee even though both are decent commercial off-road performers. The Range Rovers and Land Rovers had a reputation of needing extra repairs, and expensive repairs they were. However, those days may be behind them. The high end luxury SUV market has the Range Rover at the top of the heap for comfort and cool things that buyers of these vehicles expect.
I find it strange that the utilitarian use of off-road capability has so much of a concentration on comfort with both of the vehicles. Even the Jeep has leather seats and fancy things available. Personally I would really like to see a really tough SUV that has a durable interior and exterior along with components that are truly off-road capable. Sure, we can custom build these things, but I think that there would be a market for this type of vehicle if a good one was introduced.
The Honda Element has a polymer floor available and water resistant seats, if I remember correctly. This is a great vehicle to take the kids and Rover to the beach in.
